Things to Consider When Looking for a CrossFit Gym

In our decade of having a CrossFit Affiliate, we have had the privilege of helping many great people in our gym. And we have had many athletes move outside our area, and we encourage them to find a new community ASAP. Here are some things that we think can help you find a great new CrossFit community.

  1. Look for an Official CrossFit Affiliate
Not all gyms are built the same. There are many gyms that claim to do “CrossFit-style” workouts, but be careful. Search the CrossFit website for a local gym—it typically shows you the nearest gym. Being an affiliate involves extensive training, and owners are required to hold a CrossFit Level 2 certification, which needs to be renewed every 5 years.
  2. Find the Right Fit
  • Trial Periods: Ask if they offer a trial period.
  • Class Times: Try different class times to find the right vibe. While the class structure should be consistent from AM to PM, there is a certain vibe from class to class. Don’t be afraid to try different hours.
  • Owner-Operated: One of the wonderful things about being an affiliate is that it’s owner-operated. Each gym can run differently, so you may find one that suits you better.
  1. Do They Love CrossFit?
Do the coaches and owners actually do CrossFit? If they don’t, move on.
  2. Structured Classes
Find a class that has qualified coaches who guide you through your workout and coach you from start to finish.
  3. Equipment
Used equipment is perfectly fine, but check to see if the equipment is well maintained. Also, is there enough equipment for what the class calls for?
  4. Community and Atmosphere
CrossFit is more than just a workout; it’s a community. Look for a gym where you feel welcomed and supported. The right atmosphere can make all the difference in your fitness journey.
  5. Focus on Safety
Ensure that the gym prioritizes safety, with proper coaching on form and technique to prevent injuries. A good CrossFit gym will have a strong emphasis on safe practices and injury prevention.

Conclusion

Finding the right CrossFit gym is about more than just proximity; it’s about finding a community that fits your needs and goals. Take the time to explore your options, visit different gyms, and ensure they meet the standards that will support your fitness journey. Remember, a great CrossFit community will not only challenge you physically but also uplift you and help you grow. Happy hunting!
